Melanie believes that empowering others to be the truest, healthiest version of themselves is a privilege. Melanie uses a gentle, compassionate approach to guide her clients towards deeper self-reflection in how they perceive and interact with others in their world. She understands the uniqueness of each individual and works with her clients to provide a flexible, tailored modality that is specific to them. Melanie believes the therapeutic relationship is a place for deeper connection and provides the safety and security for her clients to feel understood and equipped with a renewed sense of hope.
Melanie brings over 28 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, working with a culturally diverse population of all ages, in both community and hospital settings. Melanie has supported women during the child-bearing years and has extensive training in perinatal depression and anxiety, trauma-informed care, intimate partner violence, and substance use. As a pediatric nurse, she has supported children and families experiencing acute and chronic illness, grief and loss.
After years of working with clients in her nursing career, Melanie completed her master’s degree in counselling because she understood that the therapeutic relationship is pivotal to healing. Melanie has used mindfulness, motivational interviewing, DBT, and ACT, in her counselling practice. Melanie has experience with adolescents, young and older adults, and has a specific interest in supporting clients as they navigate and move through life transitions, including divorce, separation and parenting, grief and loss.
Melanie has a passion for understanding the human condition and from a young age, has had a keen interest in others’ world views and life stories. She loves to travel off the beaten path, and has been to many parts of the world. Since having children, travel has taken a back seat, so she contents herself with reading and exploring locally. Yoga and meditation has been an important part of Melanie’s spiritual journey. She also enjoys horseback riding, attending concerts, and spending time in nature.
Melanie is a busy mom to three teenage boys, and understands that perfect parenting and keeping a clean house is unrealistic. In spite of that, she enjoys spending time with her family, including two dogs and a cat, on her rural property.
