What Does Therapy Cost in BC?
The BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) provides a recommended provincial fee range of
$140–$165 per 50-minute individual session.
At Darcy Bailey & Associates Counselling, individual therapy sessions start at $170, with senior therapist rates of $175, and $185 for couples and family counselling.
Fees vary slightly depending on the therapist’s experience and specialization.
These rates reflect the advanced training, supervision, and trauma-informed expertise each member of our clinical team brings to their work.
Does MSP Cover Counselling?
Short answer: No.
MSP (Medical Services Plan) does not cover private counselling with Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) or most community-based therapists.
MSP coverage applies only to physicians or psychiatrists.
However, free or low-cost programs are available through community agencies, nonprofits, or student training clinics, which we’ll outline below.
What Does Insurance Usually Cover?
Most extended health plans cover counselling sessions with Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs), Registered Social Workers (RSWs), or Psychologists, but the details differ widely.
Important:
Even within the same employer, plans can vary in what they reimburse. Before booking, confirm:
- Which provider types are covered
- The annual dollar maximum (often $500–$1,500)
- Whether you submit receipts or if direct billing is available
Some student health plans and employee assistance programs (EFAPs) offer additional coverage or free short-term sessions.
